The Fine Line Between Revision and Obsession

3/30/2012

Recently, I’ve gotten a little sidetracked by revising an older story. I loved EVERY WORD six months ago, but now I realize that it can be cut in half and make more sense. There’s a fine line between going back and refining old work, and just getting on with it and working on something new, and it can be hard to spot the difference. At a certain point, I think I have to admit that some of this isn’t going to be published and let it go, move on to other things.

I was discussing this with a filmmaker friend, who had some very wise advice: “The process of changing can be endless. I think writing captures the author’s mood/creativity/outlook at a point in time. Going back, you would always change something because you’re a different person than the person who write it (even if it’s just months ago). I fight with this all the time. Am I making it better? Or am I just making it different? Better is good. Different is a waste of time, IMO. That said, if there’s a story you love and want to update/improve, go for it!!” Thanks, Chuck Michael.

What do you think?

"Real Writers Get Rejected: We all get knocked down. This is your chance to get back up again with your rolled-up manuscript in your hand and start swinging like a ninja."

Hardship and Heartbreak

"At the end of the day, we should remember what Tolstoy said: 'If you can not write, then don't. I must write.' Creativity is a biological need for some, so I think that even though it might lead to hardship and even heartbreak, we must do it nevertheless."

Words of wisdom. Thanks, Uri Kurlianchik.

Soul Removal: Does a Boring Job Push You To Be Creative?

3/19/2012

I've seen you freelance people, struggling to find clients, to get clients to pay you, to get enough work to pay the rent after self-employment taxes. I know how many hours a day you work, and in general? I respect most of you, and dearly love a few, but you're all frakkin crazy.

There are a few good things to be said for boring jobs: paid vacation, a reliable monthly budget, and medical insurance, for starters. If you can slog through the crappy, pays-the-bills job and work on your latest piece, or manage your submissions spreadsheet, in between, isn't it worth the 9 - 5 grind?

That said, of course, a full-time job that isn't boring would be even better. But for myself, I've found that if I have a creative job, I'm less likely to push myself to be creative on my own work in my off hours. It's the soul-killers, the life-sucking pay-the-bills grinds that produce the best creative output. Don't you think?
